Internship Fund
UT Austin students have access to funding that supports participation in unpaid internships during summer 2025.
When applying for internships there are many things you might consider, including your income needs. Texas Career Engagement created the Internship Fund to help reduce the financial barriers to internship participation. Through financial support, we aim to increase access to internships for all UT Austin students.
Students with financial need who are participating in unpaid internships are encouraged to apply for the TCE Internship Fund.
TCE offers this funding program for summer internships only.
Funding
Through this Texas Career Engagement grant, students receive funding of $20 per hour up to a maximum amount of $2,400 based on internship hours completed between the first and last class day of the summer (June 5 – August 15, 2025). Selected students will receive funds in two disbursements: the first after the application has been accepted and the second in the last weeks of the internship. The internship host-employer is required to submit a confirmation of the intern’s hours for the second payment to be disbursed. The amount of the funding may be recalculated based on the final total hours completed at the internship.
Students who have unpaid internships and who receive additional UT funding for the internship – such as a stipend from your department or other UT office – can apply for the TCE Internship Fund.
The amount of this fund is limited and applicants are prioritized by financial need; therefore, not all applicants will be selected to receive funding.
Student & Internship Eligibility
Student Eligibility
Currently enrolled, degree-seeking UT Austin undergraduate and graduate students in an eligible internship that takes place prior to graduation are eligible to apply. This is a needs-based scholarship and students must have submitted a 2023-2024 FAFSA and/or TASFA to UT Austin to be eligible; priority to the limited funding is given to students based on the highest financial need. Students who have previously received the internship fund award are not eligible to receive the award again.
Internships must take place between the first and last class days of the summer: June 5 – August 15, 2025. Internships that take place after graduation are not eligible.
Course Enrollment
In addition to the student and internship eligibility requirements listed above, summer internship fund recipients must be enrolled in a UT Austin zero-credit internship course or credit-bearing internship course through your college or school. Award recipients will apply to the zero-credit internship course after selections are made; students do not need to apply to the course prior to final selections.
Internship Eligibility & Dates
Internship eligibility is reviewed on a case-by-case basis; however, following are general requirements. The internship must:
- be unpaid;
- take place off campus and not with an institution of higher education;
- provide direct and daily supervision and guidance and regular access to the supervisor;
- assign meaningful projects with learning components;
- provide the resources needed to complete the internship responsibilities;
- not charge the student tuition or other program- or placement- related fee; and
- be hosted by an employer that is an established for-profit company with the legal right to transact business in the state of the internship site, an IRS-exempt organization, a governmental entity or an established, professionally recognized and legal entity of a foreign country.
Internships must take place between the first and last class days of the summer: June 5 – August 15, 2025.
Deadline & How to Apply
Students are encouraged to apply early, as applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and priority will be given to eligible students with the highest financial need and earliest application date.
The application link will open on March 24, 2025, and the application deadline is May 2, 2025. Students will receive a determination on their application no later than June 6, 2024.
Applications must include the official offer letter provided by your employer. The offer letter must include the internship number of hours per week and the internship start and end dates. If your letter is not included or is incomplete, your application will not be accepted.
