Identity and Career: First Generation College Students

Happy First-Gen Week!

UT Austin is celebrating First-Generation Longhorns this week! First-Gen Longhorns, a UT Austin organization that support First-Generation students, defines a first-generation student as “a student whose parent(s) or guardian(s) did not have the opportunity to complete a bachelor’s degree. Many students whose parents have degrees from outside of the United States also identify as first-generation.” Check out their website & this video to learn more! TCE is excited to join the rest of campus in recognizing and uplifting first-generation Longhorns.

Storytelling and Your Career Journey

Understanding your unique story can help you speak clearly about your experiences during the interview process and can help you identify career opportunities that align with your values.

Find a Mentor

If you aren’t sure about the next chapter of your career story, a mentor can help! Connect and develop personal relationships with professionals in an industry or position of interest to you. While networking to find a mentor can seem intimidating, remember that many people like to talk about their career paths and are more than willing to help others. An easy way to get started is finding a mentor on HookedIn, which has 13,000+ alumni willing to help! HookedIn allows current Longhorns to search for alumni that are seeking mentees and filter by major, college, location, affinity interest, and more. You can ask your mentor questions like:

  • What do you wish you had known before getting into this field?
  • What skills, education, or experiences are employers in this field looking for?
  • If you could go back and do anything differently on this career path, what would you do?
  • What advice do you have for a student interested in this field?

Making connections with Longhorns can provide valuable insight to help you prepare for the future!

Identify Your Skills

The skills you gain from your diverse experiences can transfer to other environments, even if it seems unrelated! If you are struggling to identify the skills you’ve gained as a UT student, try taking an assessment on Interstride.

Go to student.interstride.com & log in with your UT email. On the top of the screen click Tools, Career Gameplan, & then Take Quiz! When you complete the quiz, you’ll receive an overall score and a list of ways to grow in your career readiness. Interstride made this assessment specially for international students, but all students can use the results to identify their strengths and areas for growth. If you have questions about your strengths or how to continue growing, make an appointment with a career professional here.
